Course Description

The Australian Privacy Act 1988 is a federal regulation that governs the way in which some business entities and federal government agencies must handle personal information. It is designed to promote the protection of individual’s privacy in Australia, by imposing obligations on those who collect and handle personal information, to manage it responsibly and transparently. This creates a unique opportunity for forward thinkers to capitalise on one of the fastest-growing web security segments. GDPA has developed this course with those people in mind. This course combines  The Fundamentals of the Australian Privacy Act course together with a number of additional units.  As such, the learner will gain the necessary knowledge to understand the Australian Privacy Act, as well as the skills to navigate the GDPA Trust Platform and potentially become a GDPA partner.   Included with this course is also a one-year free subscription to GDPA's Trust Platform.  There are no prerequisites to this course.

Course Objectives

• Understand the fundamentals of the Australian Privacy Act
• Identify and explain the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs)
• Identify who needs to comply with the Australian Privacy Act and why
• Understand and appropriately use the basic terminology of the Privacy Act
• Understand and appropriately use the terms data privacy, data security and data protection
• Recognise the key players of the APP and their responsibilities
• Understand the role of the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner in upholding privacy regulations
• Understand the Notifiable Data Breach(NDB) Scheme and eligible data breaches
• Understand information security issues and appropriate steps to take to protect personal information
• Understand privacy policies & requests
• Understand the changes introduced to Australian Privacy Act through the Privacy Legislation Amendment Act 2022
• Explain the extraterritorial reach of the act and the implications for foreign entities
• Understand how to navigate the GDPA website and TRUST platform
